How to Properly Wash Your Hair

While washing your hair may be something you’ve been doing since you were a kid, ever wonder if there are better ways to do it? Or maybe you are simply wondering how to shampoo hair properly? The good news – we have lots of suggestions based on our decades of experience in hair care.

Let us walk you through how to shampoo your hair like a pro!

How do you wash your hair to keep it healthy?

Here are answers to some of the most common shampoo and hair washing questions we hear:

How many times a week should you wash your hair?

As a rough guide, you only need to wash your hair about 2-3 times a week. However, it’s important to note that everyone’s hair is unique. What works for you may be different than what works for someone else. Your hair type, oiliness level and own personal preference may mean that you need to wash your hair more or less often.

If you don’t wash your hair often enough, you’ll have dirt buildup, but if you wash your hair too often, can result in damaged hair or a dry, itchy scalp.

What temperature water should you use to wash your hair?

Using lukewarm temperature water (~100ºF) is the best for washing and rinsing hair. This temperature allows you to clean dirt and impurities out of your hair but is not too hot so that scalp irritation can occur. Water that is too hot can also lead to dry or brittle hair and may even lead to quicker fading of color for those who have color-treated hair.

If you prefer washing your hair with hot water, make sure to end with a lukewarm rinse to close your hair cuticles. After conditioning, also rinse with lukewarm water, as this allows your hair to retain the nutrients and moisture from the conditioner at the end of your shower hair care routine.

Where on my hair should I put the shampoo? Near the scalp or at the ends?

Since shampoo is for cleansing, it is only really needed on the areas where build-up develops – in your roots and on your scalp. So, rub the shampoo onto the top part of your hair and around your scalp, and allow it to rinse through the rest of your hair.

Is it better to wash hair up or down?

You  may have heard about this trend – washing hair either while standing upright or while bending over. It’s effective to wash your hair either way – either up or down. There may be a small benefit to washing your hair upside down, as your roots will be a little bit lifted.

This will allow the shampoo to spread across the roots more easily. This would result in a slightly more thorough cleanse. But washing your hair standing up will still be very effective.

Are you supposed to use shampoo twice each time you wash?

Whether you should do a second shampoo depends on the condition of your hair and how long you go in-between hair washes. If you wash your hair infrequently, such as once a week or less often, then using shampoo a second time may be helpful. That way the first wash can remove existing build-up, and the second shampoo can actually clean the hair strands and scalp.

Signs you should wash your hair twice:

If you have a very oily scalp or tend to use many different styling products on your hair, then a double-shampoo may be helpful.

Should you rinse all the shampoo off before you use conditioner?

Yes, you should definitely rinse all the shampoo out of your hair before you use conditioner. Rinsing fully is important, since shampoo and conditioner have two different jobs for your hair.

  2. Massaging the shampoo into your roots.
  3. Rinse your hair thoroughly, until all the shampoo is gone.
  4. After rinsing, repeat if needed.
  5. Apply a light conditioner that doesn’t weigh hair down to the middle and lower parts of your hair.
